This is could be for many reasons. Porsche’s 911 Turbo coupe houses a pioneering, twin turbo-charged 3.6 litre boxer engine, which produces the output of 480 horsepower. It holds the crown as the world’s first petrol engine to use variable turbine technology (VTG), boasting an upgraded all-wheel-drive system and contemporary style.

The 911 Turbo’s engine represents a new output record for the 3.6 litre Boxer engine, producing 133 bhp per litre. This temporarily increases turbo boost by 2.9 psi, taking peak torque to 502 lb/ft.

The six-speed manual gearbox is capable of 0-60 mph in 3.7 seconds which is significant value, with the optional Tiptronic S five-speed automatic gearbox reaching the same speed in just 3.4 seconds. Both gearboxes are capable of a top speed of 193 mph.

At the heart of the 911 Turbo’s increased performance is its variable turbine geometry system. This technology is based on adjustable guide blades, which change position to guide engine exhaust flow onto the impeller wheel of the turbocharger in the most effective way possible. This equips the 911 Turbo with improved dexterity and acceleration, especially at lower rpm outputs.

The 911 Turbo brings this improved power to the road with a modernised all-wheel-drive system and a new, electronically controlled multi-disc clutch. The new Magnum is a great looking car that will get your neighbors talking as you rumble around the block. We like having a navigation system, but figuring out how to use it with the steering wheel controls made me frequently refer to the user’s manual. In spite of the high horsepower and low-end torque played with when starting from a full stop, the RT model drove averaged 20 MPG on the higway.

With the exception of the Grand National and the 90’s Riviera, it has been a long time since Buick had any kind of special car it could proudly stand behind and call uniquely its own.

Their current lineup is not much better, as the brand has become somewhat of an afterthought in terms of marketing, with the occasional Lucerne or Lacrosse debuted to an uninterested audience.

These very modern trappings manage to shake the feel that you are in a placid Buick of old and point to a positive direction for the companies interior styling.

The Riviera concept rides on GM’s midsize Epsilon platform, which means that production is not entirely beyond the realm of possibility.

There has been no mention of what power train options might be available, or even what is currently underneath the hood of the concept itself. If the vehicle did see its way to a showroom, it would most likely loose some of the more radical aspects of its exterior design – sadly, this probably means the doors – but the general feel of the car would remain the same.

Buick has seen some success in the Chinese market, and this unexpected sales windfall has caused corporate parent General Motors to seriously examine how to best position the brand in that emerging market.

A halo car like the Riviera, which in China has no negative emotional baggage from years of image mismanagement would do well to restore the carmaker’s former glory and establish Buick as more than just an also-ran in the airport car rental game.
